On the weekend of the 24th to the 26th of July 16 senior IB & VCE Art Students & 4 Art staff members travelled to Tasmania to visit the MONA gallery and explore the beautiful and picturesque city of Hobart. The trip was synchronised with Kardinia International College, Geelong, and enabled students to integrate and mix with other art students undertaking similar subjects in both IB & VCE from a different school.

The trip commenced on the Friday afternoon and after a mad dash to the airport students and staff were whisked across Bass Strait to the scenic southern city of Hobart. Staff and students resided in a quaint and comfortable hostel within walking distance of all the major sites, including galleries, cafes and markets.

Saturday was an early start with Staff and students exploring the famous Salamanca Market with its numerous stalls selling gourmet produce, arts, crafts and handiwork. Students then explored galleries surrounding the market, viewing art from local artists.  Additional galleries, museums and exhibitions were viewed in the afternoon. The fabulous day concluded with staff and students experiencing a delicious meal on the Hobart wharf.

On Sunday staff and students took the scenic ferry ride down the Derwent River to the MONA Gallery, (Museum of Old and New Art). The MONA is situated within the Moorilla winery on the Berriedale peninsula and is the largest privately funded museum in Australia.

At the MONA student experienced a range of Art work from different contemporary artists such as performance artist Marina Anramovic.  Students were also amazed by the unique gallery design and layout at MONA and the distinctive exhibition design.

Visiting the Mona and smaller private galleries in Hobart has exposed the students to art & artists and prepared students from both IB and VCE for potential exam questions

A big thank you to Mr Olver whose superb knowledge and organisation skills brought the trip to fruition.

Thank you also to the art staff who attend the trip, and ultimately the students who made the weekend excursion enjoyable and memorable. I know many are already looking forward to the next trip in 2016.   Thanks to Kardinia IC for their graciousness and warmth shown to Werribee Secondary College staff and students during the trip
